Position type: Part-time, approx. 5 hours per week, plus occasional additional shifts for events

About the Role

The Building Team Member helps keep the facilities of Whitby Christian clean, safe, and ready for ministry. While practical in nature, this role is a ministry to the Lord: preparing spaces where God's work will be carried out in people's hearts. The Building Team Member helps make every visit to our church a welcoming experience that glorifies God.

Key Responsibilities

Opening, closing, and event support

  • Open and close the building for scheduled events and rentals, following building and security procedures

  • Assist with event management, including set-up and tear-down of tables, chairs, and rooms as directed

  • Check that doors, lighting, and heating/cooling are secure and operating properly, and report any issues to the Head Custodian

  • Follow key control and alarm procedures

 

Kids' Wing reset for Sunday services

  • Clean and reset the Kids' Wing after the Saturday rental by the Math School, which finishes at 1:00 pm

  • Complete all cleaning and set-up by 8:00 am Sunday morning, so the space is ready for Sunday services

  • Sweep, mop, dust, vacuum, wipe down surfaces and toys, empty waste cans, and restock tissue and towels

  • Return furniture and equipment to its proper arrangement

 

General

  • Keep entrances, sidewalks, and common areas tidy and free of debris

  • Report supply needs, damage, and safety concerns promptly

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Head Custodian or designate

 

Schedule

  • Approximately 5 hours per week, with the core shift tied to the Saturday-to-Sunday Kids' Wing turnaround (exact times to be confirmed)

  • Additional shifts may be available monthly for events

 

 

Qualifications Required

  • Active attendee of Whitby Christian

  • At least 18 years of age

  • Able to provide references

  • Able to provide a police check (vulnerable sector check, given work in the Kids' Wing)

  • Work or volunteer experience that demonstrates diligence, reliability, and trustworthiness

  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision and meet firm deadlines

 

Assets

  • Previous cleaning, janitorial, or facility experience

  • Experience with event set-up

  • WHMIS training

 

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

  • Lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling (tables, chairs, cleaning equipment)

  • Standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, and some climbing

  • Use of cleaning chemicals, with training provided on safe handling

  • Early Sunday morning and some weekend or evening hours
